Day 2 St. Petersburg
You start your day with a guided tour of the city. You will discover the most beautiful and impressive buildings and will get an idea of the life of the locals. Walk past small, cozy cafes and bars and discover the sprayed graffiti in courtyards and side streets. Walk along the Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's main street, with its countless shops, restaurants and hotels. Visit the Kazakh Cathedral: one of the most impressive churches in Nevsky, take pictures of the colourful and breathtaking Church of the Redeemer on the Blood and climb the Isaac Cathedral and let the overwhelming cityscape take effect on you.A visit to the Hermitage is not to be missed if you are in St. Petersburg! This afternoon you will visit this unique place with its beautiful architecture. It is one of the largest and oldest museums of art and culture in the world. The collection contains more than 3 million masterpieces, art from the Stone Age to the 20th century. The main building of the museum is the breathtakingly beautiful Winter Palace, a former home of the Russian leader. The museum consists of a total of 5 buildings. See the beautiful works of Degas, Monet, Matisse, Pissaro, Velazquez, Egyptian antiques and prehistoric art.
Day 3 St. Petersburg - Petrozavodsk
One more morning to explore the city. It is also advisable to visit one of the estates outside the city. For example, take a fast boat to Petrovodets, the 'Versailles of the North'. This is the palace that Peter the Great had built for himself. A little further away is the Catharina Palace in Pushkin (Tsarkoye Selo), also a baroque building located in lush gardens.In the afternoon, take the express train to Petrozavodsk which will take you in 5 hours to the capital of Karelia.
Day 4 Petrozavodsk / excursion Kizhi
From Petrozavodsk you will make an excursion to Kizhi, the most famous attraction of Karelie. You will get on a boat that will take you in two hours over Lake Onega to the island of Kizhi. As you get closer to the island, you will see several islands and you are in a beautiful nature reserve. On the island of Kizhi stands the famous wooden Transfiguration Church with its many domes. But there is much more to see, there are several ancient wooden houses, some churches and some traditional windmills. Take a walk on the island and you will get acquainted with the traditional Karelian culture.Around four o'clock the hydrofoil will return and you will return to your hotel. If you wish, you can explore the city of Petrozavodsk on your own. A pleasant, green city situated on Lake Onega.
Day 5 Petrozavodsk - Kinerma - Sortavala
A further exploration of Karelia is planned. On the way you will see the resemblance with neighbouring Finland. Everywhere coniferous forests, interspersed with lakes and small villages. You visit one of the most beautiful villages; the Kinerma, which consists entirely of wooden houses. You will get a traditional lunch and can take a walk to the lake. Here you can make a dive in the cool water, while a campfire is being made. Of course, food will be prepared and you will be offered a local drink. The Russian life in nature at its best.Then you will visit the natural park of Ruskeala where you can visit an old marble mine, now a natural phenomenon. You will spend the night in Sortavala, located on Lake Ladoga.
Day 6 Sortavala - Petrozavodsk via Valaam
You will take the ferry to the island of Valaam in the Ladoga lake. At the beginning of the last century, Valaam was part of Finland, but it was soon conquered by the Soviet Union.
